Treatment Focus:

Attachment

Attachment therapy explores how one’s early life experiences impact their ability to form bonds and build relationships as adults.

How does poor attachment present?

Early Childhood:

Poor attachment in early childhood refers to a lack of a strong emotional bond between a child and their primary caregiver, typically their parent or parents. This can manifest in a number of ways, including the child being emotionally withdrawn, avoiding physical contact, or being overly clingy. It is important to note that poor attachment can have long-term negative effects on a child’s development, including difficulties with trust, emotional regulation, and forming relationships in the future.

Adolescence:

Poor attachment in adolescence can manifest in difficulty forming and maintaining close relationships, difficulty trusting others and difficulty with emotional regulation. It is often a result of unresolved attachment issues from early childhood and can lead to a lack of positive role models, low self-esteem and poor self-identity.

Adulthood:

In adulthood, poor attachment can lead to difficulties in forming and maintaining intimate relationships, trust issues and difficulties with emotional regulation. It can also lead to a fear of commitment, difficulty with vulnerability and difficulty with intimacy. This is often a result of unresolved attachment issues from early childhood and adolescence and can greatly impact one’s overall well-being and quality of life.

Treating Attachment Difficulties

As a counselor, I treat attachment disorder by building a therapeutic relationship with the patient. This involves helping the patient identify and process past traumas and negative experiences that may have contributed to their attachment disorder. I teach them new coping mechanisms for managing emotions and forming healthier relationships. I also provide a safe and supportive environment to help the patient develop trust and a sense of safety, which is crucial for patients with attachment disorder.
